Your Excellency,
this is to express my deep concern and to ask the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran to advocate the immediate release of the seven Bahá’í-leaders who were sentenced to a 20-year prison sentence in August after a two-year pre-trial confinement.
According to the information available, the two women and five men did not violate any law. They have been convicted solely because of their membership in the Bahá’í-religion and are currently kept in Gohardasht prison in Karaj. The seven are Mrs. Fariba Kamalabadi, Mr. Jamaloddin Khanjani, Mr. Afif Naeimi, Mr. Saeid Rezaie, Mr. Behrouz Tavakkoli, Mr. Vahid Tizfahm and Mrs. Mahvash Sabet. For years, the seven men and women facilitated a kind of emergency administration of the 300,000 Iranian Bahá’í –always with the government’s knowledge.
By having signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Islamic Republic of Iran is obligated to guarantee freedom of conscience and religion. I therefore appeal to your government to release the seven Bahá’í-prisoners immediately.
Sincerely yours,
